Mount Elephant is at the Eastern gateway to the Kanawinka Geopark, it is a steep sided volcanic scoria cone, formed about 20,000 years ago and is one of the highest volcanoes in Victoria, rising 240 metres above the surrounding plain. The area is ideal for those visitors taking motoring tours or Geotouring the area in Campervans or motorhomes.
Derrinallum, the nearest town has free parking for Campers, Campervans and caravans with toilets and other facilities at the football ground at the eastern end of town on the Hamilton Highway and also for a small charge at Deep Lake off Chatsworth Road about 2km out of town at the western end of town.
There is now plenty of water in Deep Lake after years of drought, it has also been restocked with freshwater fish so there could be some good fishing and fresh barbequed fish for dinner if you throw in a line (don't forget your Licence).
Boating is allowed on the lake so if you have a boat with you back it down the ramp and have a run out.
Plus for those on motor touring holidays there is a comfortable Hotel Motel in town offering good food and friendly service.
For the months of October 2011 to March 2012 Derrinallum Town and Country Market will also be held under the Elms on the Hamilton Highway on the 3rd Sunday of the month.
The area for several kilometres around consists of “stony rises” of more solid basalt of about the same age. This emerged from numerous vents and flowed in many directions as molten rivers of rock until they finally cooled, damming the old creek lines to form the numerous lakes in the district. There are similar areas of stony rises around the other extinct volcanic cones in the district so there is plenty to see.
In turn these stony rises sit on a much older dormant basalt plain bordered by Melbourne, Ballarat, Warrnambool, and westwards to Coleraine. These plains formed at various times over the last 20 million years.
The Mount is located about 1 kilometre west of the township of Derrinallum on the Hamilton Highway; it is approximately a one-hour drive from major regional centres such as Geelong, Ballarat and Warrnambool. It is a comfortable two-hour drive from Melbourne and Hamilton.

July 2011
The crater on Mt. Elephant was host to around 100 students from Derrinallum College Primary and Buninyong Primary School on the 16th June.

The students walked up to the crater of the Mount and separated into 3 Totem groups, Emu's, Eagle's and Kangaroo's to take part in cultural and environmental talks.
Ted Lovett and Tristan Harris preformed a welcome to country ceremony and then talked about the dreamtime and performed Cultural dances accompanied by Didgeridoo playing with the students.

Local residents spoke about volcanoes, waterways, the landscape, weeds, rabbits, tree planting and the restoration of the mount.
The day was very cold and windy but was dry, unlike last year when rain caused a hurried return to the buses before heading to Derri College for lunch.

The fire/emergency track from Heards Road to the carpark in the 1910 VR quarry on the Northside of the Mount has been a great success and has now been opened
This track opened up the Mount again after the existing access road was blocked during a dispute with an adjoining landowner.
This dispute has now been settled by the Trust for Nature legal team and they have opened up the main access road from
the Hamilton Highway to the mount.
(if you find it's been closed again try the Heards Rd entrance)

It was open for the First Public opening of the Year on Sunday 6th February 2011
and was also used for access to the Launch of a book featuring Corangamite's Landcare Volunteers
"Landcare Impressions
Sowing the seeds of Change in Corangamite"
This was held at the Mount on Tuesday 8th February 2011.
For anyone not familiar with the area, Heards Road runs parallel to the Hamilton Highway on the opposite (Southside) of the Mount.
The access road entrance is near the junction of Heards Rd and Centre Rd.
Access to Heards Road via O' Donnell Road, Centre Rd or
the Derrinallum/Camperdown Road.
